Pratap SJB Rana's paintings are prolific and reflect a deeper understanding of symbolism and its connection to spirituality and mythology. His colours are distinctive and his style is eccelectic. That's what adds to a certain "je ne sais pas quoi" kind of quality to his canvasses.
He is represented by galleries in India and abroad and has numerous exhibitions to his credit. His works are on exhibit at the Indira Gandhi International Airport / private lounge in New Delhi where art afficionados in transit have been so impressed that they have picked up his works and have flown out with it! Yes his works do adorn the walls of noted personalities as well as true art lovers in India and abroad.
I present a selection of his works here at WIND CHIMES OF COLOUR.
Each work is picked for the special vibe it generates and the good vibrations and good tidings it will bring to any house it adorns.
Do get in touch should you wish to own one of his works.

The strength within I
The works depict an inner strength or the strength within us, which the arches represent. Arches are one of the strongest and oldest structures in architecture which bear tremendous stress and strain therefore the significance and the corelation. the artist has observed this architectural structure at various archaeological and historical sites around the world and has been fascinated by them.Arches are elegant and magnificent and stand proud even when all structures around them succumb to the vagaries of nature or the test of time.

The artist has experienced a great sense of peace on every occasion that he visited a cathedral.from the minimalistic, modern Scandinavian to the grandiose gilded European styles the all prevailing sense of calm has been consistent. The artist has always walked away with a lasting impression of the hallowed silence, the mighty pillars and the rafters high above. But the most fascinating of all have been the stained glass windows. The play of light, the vivid colours, all streaming into the hallowed halls seemed to be a symphony of happiness and a source of absolute joy and inspiration. These stained glass windows seem to be the very symbol of the unending love between the faithful and their faith, evoking no awe, no fear but love stripped down to its barest and purest form.

Windows of Faith III

Divine Resonance - Tang Du, the Tibetan prayer drum
A series in progress, depicted here by the Tibetan prayer drum that resonates evocative vibrations high into the cold and silent mountain air. The even beat reminds one of monks deep in meditation and the heavy smell of incense. The resonance reaches out to honour and pacify the protective God, Mahakala.

Across Faiths - Crusades
Crusades have existed right across faiths and times in some form or the other. This work has been inspired by a trip to Spain. Many knights went on the Crusades to bring themselves fame and glory in the old tradition of chivalry; a few went solely to make their fortune, but the vast majority of Crusaders went on the journey for reasons of faith — in religious devotion, to obtain absolution or remission of sins, and be granted salvation in the afterlife. That belief continues to this day.

The Wheel of Harmony
Buddhists from the Himalayas state that they experience a deep sense of harmony in their homes and environment when the prayer wheel is placed in their abode. A number of Tibetan commentaries state that having a prayer wheel in a building makes that place become like the Potala - the pure land of the Buddha. Without doubt the prayer wheel’s beauty and energy exudes a very clear and positive effect.
In this work the artist has attempted to capture this sense of harmony and surrounded the prayer wheel with symbolic representations of the prayer flags that traditionally, are used to promote peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom. The Tibetans believe the prayers and mantras on the flags will be blown by the winds to spread good will and compassion into all pervading space, hence benefitting one and all. Visually, the work is syncretic in its essence and a fusion of the contemporary with the traditionally spiritual.

On Hallowed Ground III
Hallowed ground is a term used for a sacred place. It is a place that is considered to be highly venerated and sacrosanct and is usually blessed by a priest or a monk. In this work the artist tries to capture on canvas the sanctity of the hallowed ground by depicting the devotee bowing and hence showing his submission to the will of God and of his being a true believer. The work portrays unquestioning, undying devotion.

Flight II
It is that state of not being imprisoned and enslaved by thought, society, borders and all that is conformational that inspired this work.
The artist creates traditional forms of beauty that are within the bars of acceptance but expresses his yearning to break free of the very framework of the work itself as depicted by the Hummingbird attempting to fly off the canvas itself on a discovery beyond the boundary.
The bird represents resiliency, and to the artist this translates into the ability to keep going emotionally, physically and above all spiritually. It seems to emphasise the ability to rise above troubles and hardships with ease and joy.

About the artist
Pratap SJB Rana succumbed to the call of his heart and left a thirty year career in the corporate sector to put brush to canvas. He brings a wonderful syncretic sensibility to his work which is influenced by his origins in Nepal and tenures across South East Asia and Sri Lanka.
Pratap's works are contemporary yet rooted in tradition. The use of bold colours reflects his passion for life, while the layering and play of brushstrokes bring out subtle nuances and rhythm. His paintings are rich in texture and depth and have a minimal approach to the subject, which is used to anchor attention. His deliberate attempt to use simple forms and vivid backgrounds compels the viewer to reflect, abstract and then delve into the concept.
His works are spread over a wide spectrum of thematic interpretations of all that touches his soul. Hence strong spiritually influenced abstractions and figuratives, zen like musings, the calm of a European park in autumn, the rising from the ashes of a Warsaw, the futility of the cause of the crusades, the spectacular wilderness of Iceland are some of the themes and subjects; all vividly and uniquely depicted on canvas ensuring a freshness to the style and treatment of each canvas. Pratap is clearly a thinking artist who paints from the heart.
With a solo show in Malaysia, Pratap put himself and his work on the map. He is currently represented by a number of galleries and is making his presence felt in the art world. His works are now a part of private collections of prominent collectors in India and abroad.
